The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest movement of herd animals on Earth—a continuous, year-round survival journey across 300,000 square kilometers of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Driven by seasonal rains and the search for fresh grazing, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by 250,000 zebras and gazelles, march in a clockwise circle across Tanzania and Kenya.
Where & When the Calving Season Happens
While the dramatic river crossings take place in the north between July and October, the Calving Season is the true heartbeat of the migration, occurring between January and March in the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu Plains (which straddle the Ngorongoro Conservation Area).
During these three months, nutrient-rich volcanic soils in the southern short-grass plains sprout short, calcium-dense grass fed by short rains. This nutrient burst provides essential nourishment for pregnant wildebeest.

During the peak window in February, synchronization reaches its height: over 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every single day within a localized 2 to 3-week window. 1. Best Time to Book & Seasonality
Peak Season: January to March is the official calving window. February is the absolute peak when the highest density of births occurs.
Advance Booking: Ndutu accommodation capacity is extremely limited compared to Central Serengeti. Book at least 4 to 8 months in advance to secure prime camps within the calving zone.
2. Essential Packing Guide
Clothing: Layered clothing is crucial. Early morning game drives in Ngorongoro and Ndutu can be cold (10°C / 50°F), while afternoons get warm (28°C / 82°F). Wear neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive). Avoid blue or black clothing, as it can attract tsetse flies in wooden areas.
Footwear: Comfortable closed walking shoes or trail runners. Heavy hiking boots are unnecessary unless doing bush walks.
Photography Equipment: Bring a telephoto lens (300mm to 600mm) for predator shots from the vehicle. Pack extra memory cards, dust-proof bags, and power banks (lodges charge via solar power).
Dust Protection: Ndutu during dry spells or light wind can be dusty. Bring a neck gaiter (buff), sunglasses, and eye drops.

Day-by-Day Itinerary Breakdown
Your safari starts with a morning pick-up in Arusha. After a brief trip overview, you will depart in a custom 4x4 Land Cruiser toward Tarangire National Park (a 2.5-hour drive).
Known as the "Home of the Elephants," Tarangire is famous for its massive baobab trees and large elephant herds. You will spend the day on game drives along the Tarangire River, watching wildlife gather at the water sources—including giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, and tree-climbing lions. Enjoy a bush picnic lunch inside the park before continuing an afternoon game drive. In the late afternoon, exit the park and head toward your lodge in Karatu for dinner and overnight rest.

After an early breakfast, ascend into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, enjoying views of the crater rim before descending onto the southern short-grass plains toward the Ndutu area.
Ndutu straddles the border of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro. You will arrive in time for an afternoon off-road game drive across the short-grass plains. This area is the focal point of the Great Migration calving season, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeests gather. You will witness newborn calves taking their first steps and spot resident predators—such as cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and jackals—actively hunting in the open terrain.

After breakfast, leave the southern plains and head north into the Central Serengeti (Seronera Valley). The central area is characterized by open savannas, acacia trees, and granite rock formations (kopjes).
Spend the morning on a game drive through the Seronera River valley, a reliable area for spotting leopards resting in acacia trees, lion prides lounging on kopjes, and hippos at the Retima Hippo Pool. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the Serengeti. In the afternoon, begin your transit back south toward the Ngorongoro highlands, arriving in Karatu by evening for dinner.
